You may think your USB flash drive is pretty handy for getting files from A to B without network hassles, but that’s the very least of it. You can transform that little memory stick into a veritable Swiss Army-style knife (digitally-speaking) by loading it up with useful software tools – the so-called portable apps. These nifty little programs can be copied onto your flash drive without any installation. And once there, they can be run from any computer that your drive is plugged into. No need for taking that laptop around with you; all of your most important software can now be packed into your pocket-able flash drive.

Since the portable apps first made their appearance with the rise-and-rise of USB flash drives – an ever-growing swathe of programs have had the tag ‘portable’ added to them. Many of these can cost; but there are plenty that don’t. So upgrading you memory stick, from a dumb data-carrier to a personalized toolkit, needn’t cost you a cent. Look below for the ‘cream of the crop’ in current portable-app offerings; ones that combine portability and utility with frugality.

Portable Firefox

Want to browse on-the go, without leaving your browsing history written all over the computer you USB pen is plugged into? Portable versions of popular browsers are becoming more available, but one of the first, and possibly still the best, is the portable version of Mozilla Firefox. Try using Portable Firefox together with the JonDo-Portable service. The two combined allow for anonymous browsing; and the JonDoFox config comes with extra security layers. Because Portable Firefox is aimed for flash-drive use, it cuts back on reading to-and-from the disk – making your browsing experience a snappy, as well as a secure, one.

Open Office Portable

Open Office has carved out a well-deserved reputation as the premier (but free) alternative to Microsoft Office. Now you can have the full suite of office productivity apps whereever you go, by dropping Open Office Portable onto your USB drive. Open Office includes feature-laden spreadsheet, word processor, drawing and presentation tools. Both PortableApps and winPenPack provide portable versions of Open Office (and its latest incarnation– LibreOffice). There are some features that require you to throw the portable version of Java onto your USB drive too – databases for example, but otherwise this is a plain-sailing portable app solution.

GimpPortable

In case you don’t know about it, Gimp is the excellent image editor, and photo manipulator, from the open software gurus at Gnu. Admittedly, the interface is somewhat confusing, and it can take a while to get things set-up to your liking. But there’s not much you can’t do with Gimp, especially if you are looking to sharpen, correct and bring your personal photo collection to life. The portable version works just as well, and there are no issues with it spilling over onto the host computer (which some so-called ‘portable’ apps annoyingly still manage).

PDF-XChange Viewer

The need to mess around with Adobe’s PDF format has become ever more pressing, as the PDF file continues to rule supreme as the medium of document exchange on the web. But with PDF-XChange Viewer, you need never be ‘PDF blind’ when out and about. This handy app allows you to view, extract from, and even annotate PDF files – all from the cozy confines of your USB drive. You can also reformat PDF docs into various graphical image formats, such as JPEG, BMP, PNG or TIFF. The portable version – as is common with many portable apps – is also considerably smaller, and nippier, than the traditionally installed software.

Toucan Portable

With all of that extra software making your flash drive a more critical part of your computing use, you’ll want to make sure your files and software are backed up – and kept up to date. This is where an app like Toucan Portable becomes vital. You can use Toucan to archive files to a back-up drive or folder – or you can set it up to synchronize with an online source. The backup functionality is advanced for a free tool, allowing for 256-bit encryption, compression, and either incremental, or differential, backups.

1by1

Music files often find a natural home on flash disks; so it’s not surprising that a music player is often at the top of the list of desired portable apps. 1By1 is just such an app – renowned as one of the simplest-to-use, whilst hiding advanced playback features under its spartan hood. It also has a very low disk-space footprint, in portable mode, making it ideal for sneaking onto your flash drive. As well as coming with graphic equalizer and amplifier ‘as standard’, it can play OGG and WAV files, in addition to the usual MP3, through plug-ins. An impressive portable app that no wandering music lover should be without.

GnuCash Portable

Spreadsheets don’t always cut it when it comes to keeping accounts. Fortunately, for small businesses, as well as account-minded individuals, GNU has come up with a freeware solution – GnuCash. This is a powerful little accounting package that handles plenty of the accountants stock-in-trade – double-entry bookkeeping, P&L tracking and customized reports. Now, with this portable version of GnuCash, you can take and update your accounts where ever you are. Of course, security is a paramount concern when you have sensitive financial data burning a hole in your pocket. So GnuCash Portable must be partnered with strong disk-encryption software. And be aware that using the online banking facility does write to the host computer’s registry – so better to avoid that feature if you want true portability.

FreeOTFE Explorer

It’s one thing being small and portable – quite another to be small enough to be lost. And while you’re putting portable apps onto your flash, you’re also putting on a lot portable, personal, data too. So you’ll need to lock that flash drive down. A disk encryption tool is the obvious answer; and FreeOTFE Explorer, a portable, open software program, does the job well. It doesn’t require installation, or system administration rights (unlike many other ‘portable’ encryption apps). And it has a strong complement of encryption modes, with algorithms such as Serpent, AES or Twofish. Because it keeps itself independent of the file system, there isn’t any of the usual file-based integration into the operating system. But FreeOTFE Explorer is amply up to the job of moving files around itself. And this approach means you get peace of mind, without leaving a whisper of your presence on the host computer – important for true portability in any app, especially a security one.

Just like many offline businesses fail to realize the power of Internet for marketing purpose, many online ventures make an even bigger mistake of not considering the offline marketing tactics to promote their blogs or websites. It doesn’t matter at all if you are selling your products or services at a brick and mortar store, or bits and bytes store. At the end of the day, you are looking for customers/visitors and for that you need marketing, and there’s no law that stops you from using an offline channel, if your business exists in the cyber world (or vice versa). If you are running an online business or blog that’s targeting the users coming from a particular locality or city, and you are relying solely on Search Engine Optimization (or other online strategies), then you are probably missing a trick. At times, reaching out directly to your target market while using a number of offline marketing channels can turn out to be far more cost-effective, and beneficial as compared to getting engaged in a painfully long battle of SERP’s.

Making use of anunorthodox, yet highly effective tool known as stickers is one such tactic. It’s cheap, it’s unconventional, and it is quite easy to pull off. Chances are that you have got someone offering printing service in a nearby market, in case you can’t find any, you can always use one of those online printing services like $ or $, and get the stickers delivered at your doorstep. Once you’ve found such service and inquired about the rates, all you need to do is to think of an idea on how to use this wonderful tool to reach out to your target market.

Remember, that you need people to put these stickers on their stuff, so you will have to give them a reason to place them on their cars, bikes, doors, shops, desktops, and the likes. Following are some ideas that you can use on stickers along with the URL of your website/blog and get some free promotion.

Inspirational

People like to read and share inspirational messages with their friends, colleagues, customers, etc.If you can think of an inspirational message to put on your sticker, especially with a picture (because a picture is worth a thousand words),chances are that the sticker will find its place on their possessions. Remember that the inspirational message or quote must be relevant to your target market. For example, if your target market consists of marketing personals, you can think of a message giving them some insightful advice on dealing with people, motivation, or if you are catering teenagers, you can try quotes talking about following your dreams and the likes.

One liner

Another thing that you’ll find people sharing, something that brings smile to their faces, or make them look at the challenges of life in a lighter way, it can be something very simple like “The early bird might get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese”. You can search the ever-so-reliant internet to find a relevant one liner, or you can think of an interesting one that syncs with your website or blog.

Cool Statements

Cool one-liners are a little different to the funny ones; these are statements with an attitude, allowing the users to kind of brag, which is fine, because your URL is getting promoted while someone tries to make an impression. Again this one will work if you can strike the right chord, remember your target market and think of some point that they’d like to show off for fun, and chances are that many of them will oblige.

Everyday Messages

You can always get some stickers with a message of routine use and distribute them to shopkeepers, professionals, or anybody else who will use them on their doors, in shops, desktops, and the likes. For example, you can get some interesting stickers printed with the sign that says “push” or “pull” for doors and many shopkeepers will happily use it on their shops.

Creative

The aforementioned ideas were for those who are in a hurry, but you never know, how some “out of the box” thinking can get you a novel idea that will click and get your business into the limelight, by getting the stickers with your URL at every nook or corner of the locality.

The best part is that stickers doesn’t cost much as far as printing charges are concerned, you can visit some local printing shop or simply search for an online service that ships to your country and you will be ready to go.

Bashir likes to think out of the box and share these tips. If you’d like to act upon the advice in the article, feel free to avail vistaprint promotion and coupon code for psprint to ger your stickers printed at discounted rates, and vista print or psprint discounts are not that only discounts that you will get.

As we head into 2012, it’s worth taking a quick timeout to assess the state of web development at the moment. It’s not getting any easier to develop websites nowadays, as new frameworks and technologies continue to crop up at an unrelenting pace. In order to be as productive as possible, you need to take advantage of any tool you can find. Android applications allow us to hone our craft and work overtime on web development projects from any location. Here are five of the best Android apps available at present for web developers.

(Courtesy of iStylr)

Webmaster’s HTML Editor Lite

Though Androids are great at a number of different tasks, they suffer from the same screen limitations as any other mobile device. Editing HTML markup and code on your phone doesn’t have to be a chore, as the Webmaster’s HTML Editor Lite app demonstrates. It even works offline, so you don’t need a mobile broadband Internet connection to be productive during downtime or when inspiration strikes. Considering that it’s free, offers syntax highlighting, and features code completion, there’s no reason not to download this highly capable editor.

(Courtesy of mchelen)

ConnectBot SSH

Even if you’re not a web developer, having quick and convenient shell access to remote machines is a must in today’s highly mobile and distributed work environment. Regardless of the speed of your broadband Internet connection at home or on the road, ConnectBot SSH gives you the power to phone home from your Android handset. Whether you need to SFTP some files to your web server or just grab a document from your home or office PC, ConnectBot has got you covered.

View Web Source

Studying the work of your peers is often the best way to come up with new ideas. Some times when we’re browsing the web on our smart phones, we’ll see something truly awesome and wonder how a particular developer managed to pull it off. View Web Source allows you to quickly and easily check the source markup and code of any web page to get the full details on how another developer accomplished a specific feature or layout. Free to download, it’s easily one of the most useful web development apps on the market.

Analytix

Split testing is quickly becoming a must for every web developer regardless of what kind of project they’re working on. Most analytics applications for Android and the iOS platform are merely front ends for services like Google Analytics. Analytix for Google Analytics is no different, but it’s far more full-featured than its competitors. Users can view and graph their analytics data on their smart phones in a number of different ways. Whether you’re interested in charting social media page views or traffic from a specific location, Analytix is the best tool for the job.

KWS Web Server

Every developer worth his or her salt has a local server environment such as a LAMP stack installed on their home PC. KWS Web Server by AppBrain gives its users the same website or web application testing functionality on their Android phones. The free version features Dynamic DNS updates, SSI, basic authentication, and up to 20 parallel connections. If you need a basic testbed for your applications on your Android, this free and handy web server ought to do the trick.

(Courtesy of l i l o n d r a and incredibleguy)

Final Thoughts

Once upon a time, knowledge of HTML, Javascript, and CGI modules was enough to get by in the world of web development. Those days are long gone, and they’re not coming back. Web developers need to stay on their toes and continue to learn to remain relevant. Having the right software tools to save time and streamline your work flow is incredibly important. Using your Android smart phone for increased efficiency is the best way to do that, and the applications listed above are a great way to get started with mobile web development.

This is a guest article by Ruben Corbo, a writer for the website Broadband Expert where you can find broadband internet in your area and compare prices on different deals for your mobile broadband needs.

In the recent days the term “Smartphones” is really tossing up a bit around the globe. But it will be really interesting to wonder what is this smart phone and how it is differing from day to day use cell phones. One should definitely wonder these days that are mobile phones only meant for calling facility? Is there no other facility that a mobile phone can give you when you know that the world is reaching new heights in technology continuously? Well, the answer is a smartphone.

Definition

In a nutshell, a smartphone can be defined as a device that enables us not only to make calls but also provide other features, which in the past, we used to get from computers and PDA’s such as sending and receiving mails and editing office documents. If we look into the past, cell phones were used for calling and texting only. Eventually cell phones added computer features and it finally resulted in the origin of smartphones. Smartphone was actually a term pointed out by the marketers to differentiate their PDA cum phones from the rest of the pack. It is basically a cellular telephone which has built in apps along with wide internet access and facilities like text messaging, web browsing, mp3 players and maybe video calling .In addition to this a smartphone can run myriad applications.

Key features of a Smartphone

There is no standard definition of the term “Smartphones” found across the globe. So it will be really helpful to point out some of the basic distinctions why everyone is differentiating it from cell phones. So here are the main features:-

Operating system:

Generally, the operating system(OS) will enable the user to run applications and do any other personal jobs .Here are some of the examples of operating systems used by the modern day smart phones.

The iphone runs the iOS

Blackberry smartphone runs the blackberry OS

Other devices run google’s android OS, hp web OS, microsoft windows phone

Apps:

Most cell phones even the ordinary ones includes some sort of software and the basic models include an address book or some contact manager. But as this is a smartphone so it will allow something definitely more than the ordinary phones. It allows us to create and edit microsoft documents, in viewing files, also allows us to download applications such as personal and business finance managers, handy personal assistants.

Web Access:

Web browsing is definitely a key feature and one can access his favorite sites or download apps from the net. Thanks to the inventions of modern day, that high speed net surfing technologies such as 3G, 4G and also the wireless LAN (wi-fi) that are introduced in the cell phones.

GPS

The GPS functionality is what makes a smartphone look smarter.

And with the addition of google maps to the mix a complete navigational kit is found inside it than the other devices. Using this app one can easily find their way in a city or a less populated place. Applications like Heyway makes things easier that the person will no longer have to take info from others while travelling.

Storage:

Smartphone have enough rooms for one to store enormous amount of data. One can easily store their required pictures, documents, songs, videos, apps in it itself rather than needing a flash drive or hard disks or floppies to store it. Smartphones allows us to store data as high as 32 GB-80 GB and above.

High display and style:

Tiny in size though but a breathtaking quality such as HD, bluerays, HQ pictures and videos are offered by smartphones. The video quality is rich bright vivid and some smartphones offers 10 megapixel camera resolution and 1080p recording facility.

Word processing, spreadsheet application, making presentations slideshows are accessed in smartphones anywhere anytime, which were the common features of desktops and laptops in earlier days.

So from the outlook it is evident that a smartphone is quite efficient device and a swift tool with all the abilities of a laptop or pc which will force someone to buy a smartphone rather than desktop.

Overall the simplicity and intuitiveness of smartphone that comes first into the users mind before arguing whether to buy a smartphone than a laptop no matter how expensive it is.

An internet store, also known as online shopping cart and web store, plays crucial role in the success of your ecommerce business. An online shopping cart solution help sellers to place products in appropriate categories and they can easily keep track on stocks. To get a good ROI, you should ensure that your web store is designed in a user-friendly manner and it should have stunning features that can grab users’ eyes.

Below I have discussed the top 6 ways to get the successful online shopping cart:

Dynamic Store-front

You can create a dynamic web store by featuring a different product every day on its landing page. You can highlight certain products so your site can become more interactive with users. The phrase “First Impression Is the Last Impression” is very well suited in this scenario. Your storefront is the main parameter visitors see on your site and thus the design of the site defines the credibility of your online business.

Auto- management of Stock

When stock of specific product is empty then that particular product should be automatically removed from the stocks’ list. Stock management is one of the core functionality of any commerce be it online or offline business.

Effective Product Management

Similar to stock management, product management is also one of the core functionality of successful ecommerce business. Do not keep the products in list which are not available in the stock. Regularly update your product list and accommodate newly added products if any. Users most often see the products list on store before going for any specific product description page.

User Registration

User registration is a great idea to establish strong relationship with the buyers. All you have to do is put a sign up template on your home-page and ask users to register if they want to get product updates’ and promotions’ news directly in their Inbox. But one critical thing you have to ensure here is that your sign up form should not be too lengthy and should not ask more details from user. You should keep this option as optional as keeping it mandatory may annoy users.

Perfect Blend of Effective and Consistent Website Design

You can keep changing the look and feel of your website so that users can find something new every time they visit your site. Website design should be appealing enough to make users revisit your site again and again. However, while updating the look of your design, the consistency of web-pages should not be disturbed. Users should find all web-pages in accurate flow.

Apply Marketing Tactics

Having a web store with great functionality and stunning look is not enough to generate traffic for your site. You need to pull out all the stops to attract users in buying your products and to do so you need to use some of the proven marketing tactics. For example, if someone is just browsing products on your website, your site should suggest user some latest products on your site. There are plenty of other marketing strategies you can apply to boost your sales.

All in all, if you want to get tremendous cash flow from your web store, focus on few things like Design, features, SEO compliance, flexibleness, database system, reports and future expansion. Considering these points will surely keep you one step ahead from your rivals!

Controversial topics differ from other topics because the readers are already passionate about the topic. The key to engaging the reader is to convert their passion for the topic into interest in your website. Controversies arise in every aspect of life. At times, it is easy to determine from the outset that a decision or event will spark controversy. At other times, controversies seem to come almost out of nowhere. Engaging readers means that you have to manage how they approach the controversy. If you define your objectives and set parameters, you can stay on top of the controversy, without it overwhelming your readers or your site.

Typical goals for a website are to increase the number of visitors by a specific percentage point or an absolute number. For interactive websites, a goal might be to encourage visitors to leave a set number of comments or to signal their approval through a “thumbs up” or similar system. In some instances, your goal may be to generate a spike in visitor traffic to coincide with a specific advertising campaign. Still others may be interested in developing a following of readers who will stay with the website over years rather than just days or weeks.

You can choose to focus on a specific controversy or use controversy as a general proposition to engage readers. If you work with a specific controversy, you must align the website’s content to highlight the controversy. The idea is to become a destination site for people who are interested in the specifics of the discussion. Your site may endorse one side of the controversy or include multiple viewpoints. Focusing on one side of an issue helps to define a site clearly for its readers. Using a multiple viewpoint strategy would seem to favor a site that is interested in controversy regardless of the specific topic.

You can raise reader engagement with an issue when you help them to define the components of the discussion. Break down issues into key segments through articles, images, blog posts or headlines. Give readers distinct talking points by which they can navigate the discussion. For example, military action is often controversial, but readers do not need that generic concept from you. They will become engaged when they understand what you think might be good or bad about military action. Include commentary about the topic from key participants. To stay relevant, pull in comparisons with other topics that may relate to the main controversy when there are few new developments in the main controversy.

On controversial topics, many readers look for someone who validates their opinions. Their passion for the subject has informed them that they are right, they only need someone to give them reasons why they are right. Some people will be interested in the other side of the issue only to the extent that they can expose its faults. Presenting both sides of the argument is a worthy endeavor and very often dispassionate. It takes some of the steam out of the passion that readers bring with them. The benefit of a neutral discourse is that it presumably will attract more visitors. However, these visitors may not be the engaged active visitors that you are seeking.

The drawback to trying to engage readers with controversy is that the ill will that some readers may transfer the ill will they hold for the subject matter onto the site. If the controversy is central to your site, then this may be unavoidable. If the controversy is only incidental to the major focus of the website, then you will have to exercise greater care to maintain the identity of the site while expressing opinions about the controversy.

Readers have numerous outlets to express their opinions about controversial subjects. To ensure that they choose your site as their source of information, stay abreast of the latest developments in the controversy. Clearly outline the way you believe the argument should be framed. Keep track of your traffic statistics to understand how visitors respond to your efforts. Working with controversial topics is not without its share of problems, but for many sites, it may be an effective method to reach and retain readers.

Great content is one of the most important keys to success, but creating it is a process that doesn’t come easily or naturally. It takes time and effort to reach the point that you understand how to grow and cultivate a loyal audience. Thankfully, there are ways to capitalize on your company’s preexisting talent in order to make the process easier.

1. Create How-To Articles

Odds are there are people who work for you that know things most people don’t. Whether you’re a construction contractor or a retirement planning firm, your employees should have some specialized knowledge that makes them an expert at something.

Take advantage of this insider knowledge. Encourage some of your employees to write about what they know. Have them offer advice to somebody who doesn’t know how to do what they do. How-to articles are immensely popular and one of the most common reasons people turn to the internet for information. Be sure to keep it simple and easy to understand so that you avoid preaching to the choir.

The ideal how-to article accomplishes a few things. It takes a little bit of time to let your audience know why they would want to know how to do this in the first place. It then breaks the process down into a series of easy to follow steps.

You may want to give your articles a “difficulty level” rating. This way you can write three how-to articles for the same subject, each targeted for a different skill level.

2. Build Insider Connections

Your company’s internal expertise allows you to develop relationships that most people can’t. Because your experts speak the same language as other influential people in your industry, it’s easier to reach out to these people and ask them for something.

Industry insider relationships are a key part of content generation. This is because these relationships will give you access to information that most people don’t have. And this brings us to our next point.

3. Offer Proprietary Information

This one can be a bit unnerving, especially in some industries, and there’s good reason for that. You don’t want to blow the lid off of a secret project or give away your competitive advantage. At the same time, the only reason people seek content online is because it’s something they don’t already know or haven’t already seen.

If you have access to information that isn’t publicly available, you may want to consider making it public. This is a powerful way to grab attention. You’ll need to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of this, of course.

Unfortunately, most businesses err on the side of keeping too much information to themselves. You build tremendous amounts of reputation and trust by offering information that wasn’t publicly available before. The most important part of the process is having some control over how the information is released so that your company receives the majority of the credit for the information.

4. Get Behind the Paywall

Simply by being subscribed to industry magazines and newsletters, you should already have access to information that most people don’t. You have already gotten past the paywall. Very few people are willing to pay to see information on the web.

Your expertise also allows you to sift through all of the industry information and present it in a way that is accessible to the public. If you start with data, rather than starting with an article or a post already in existence, you’ll be able to offer your audience something new. The ability of your experts to perform genuine, novel research is one of your greatest assets.

5. Give them a Reason to Listen

One of the greatest things that your company’s experts have to offer is the fact that they are experts. Almost anybody can set up a website and rant on the internet, and most people are already well aware of this fact. Just by taking the time to point out that your employees are experts, and why, gives you credibility that other online presences don’t have.

Make sure your audience understands who your author’s are, and why they are worth listening to. If you’ve hired talented people, you shouldn’t have any trouble pulling this off.

Google has been up against the content firms and has caused the untimely demise of many sites that are alleged to host thin content or duplicate content. The main accusation against these sites was that these sites are not adding much value to users and are like parasites making the whole web murkier. Now, since the main concept of running a affiliate business online means copying and pasting the same product description or services, affiliate sites are less likely to get the coveted position in SERP. But this does not mean that it is impossible for an affiliated site to get to the top in competitive keywords.

Impossible is nothing and here we are going to share how you are supposed to make your affiliate site reach new height of success in Google SERP without reinventing the wheel:

Do Not Harbor Duplicate Content

If your affiliated website contains duplicate content, you are dead. Affiliated sites that have no original content of their content are not going to rank in Google. However, just having original content is not the end of the task, the content has to be user-focused, well written and informative to the core, so that Google can easily differentiate your website from rest of the other. You need to take some time and do some extra work to get your website wins the favor of Google.

It should Not All About Affiliated Program

You are running your business for a living but that should be the one and only reason behind keeping alive your website. There is nothing evil in running an affiliate program in your website but make sure the entire website is not only about affiliate program otherwise, it will send wrong signal to Google that your website does not have anything unique to offer. Apart from affiliate program, your website needs to have a unique online identity.

Do Not Be Jack of All trades

before you choose the affiliate program for your website, you need to have clear idea of your intended audience. For say, a sport magazine is supposed to have a large fan base of sport lovers and therefore, it makes perfect sense that you are going to sell things like sport shoes, sport wears rather than trying to sell bikinis. So, it will be better if you are targeting a small group of products or service rather than going for the entire range which will demand more attention. Create some nice articles, guidelines and add some nice images against the products

Focus on Users Retention

Do not bother just about selling products or getting links from high PR domains. You need to build a great community where visitors can gather and vent their anger or share their happiness or else, you can create a blog where you need to post useful articles on regular basis. Regular flow of fresh articles will keep your readers hooked to your website and search engines will crawl your website regularly. So double benefits waiting for you.

However, the bottom-line is that your website needs to be different from the rest of others, otherwise Google will not care a fig giving your website top ranking in some competitive keywords.

Guest posting is a great way to help spread the word about your own site and get some additional traffic. And as a site or person that accepts guest posts it is a great way to get free content for your site, and potentially build relationships with other sites. However, many people go into guest posting with ideas and actions that not only make their guest posting strategy ineffective but also may hurt their site in the long run. From both parties involved in guest posting there are some common mistakes you should avoid.

Let’s start with the person that is writing the guest post and trying to get it published on another site with a link or two back to their own sites. One common mistake people sometimes make is being a little too excessive. This particularly falls in with new guest posters that may send successive emails regarding the status of their post. These excessive emails only make them seem annoying and will only create a bad name for them as a guest poster. There’s nothing wrong with a follow up email, but only if it’s been a substantial amount of time and you still haven’t gotten a response.

Then there is the issue of guidelines. Many sites that accept guest posts will offer guidelines as to what guest posts should include. They may lay out the potential topics, word length, picture requirements, and their policy on linking. As a writer it is your obligation to meet these guidelines. For example, many sites will only allow links in the author byline. If you submit your post with links in the actual article it not only shows that you didn’t care enough to look at the guidelines, but also that even if you did you just disregarded them. This does not put you in a good view of the site and will likely get any of your guest posts rejected. On the same note, don’t overestimate your writing ability. Higher quality sites demand higher quality posts, so if you want to guest post there you will need to put in the extra effort.

Now let’s flip things over to the site that is receiving and publishing these guest posts. One of the biggest mistakes I’ve seen sites make is having hypocritical standards and guidelines. Don’t ask that guest posters write 600 word articles when the articles you write yourself are only 400. There’s nothing wrong with wanting quality posts, but make sure what you are asking for is reasonable and sensible.

Sites also often make the mistake of asking for guest posts too early in their life span. If you have a new blog or site, don’t ask for guest posts. It makes it seem like you are just trying to get free content since a backlink on a brand new site really isn’t worth anything in terms of SEO and traffic. Instead wait until your blog is established, has an audience, and a good amount of content. This is the time where you can ask for guest posts and offer relatively valuable links in return.

As a guest poster I have only run into this issue a couple of times, but I still can’t believe that some sites do it. Some sites will charge you to guest post on their site. This means that after you write them the free piece of content you need to pay the site in order to get posted. This is the equivalent of painting someone’s fence and then paying them for doing so. This completely turns away many guest posters from your site as they can’t afford it or just simply don’t think that it is worth the money.

If you are thinking about getting involved in guest posting don’t fall to these common mistakes. Remember to be respectful and courteous and never ask for or write something that you would not accept yourself.

If you have a blog or website, it is important that you keep your readers engaged and interested in what you have to say. To determine if you are engaging your readers enough, pay close attention to the following 10 signs.

If your readers are not responding to your questions or requests for feedback or information, you should consider that a sign that your readers are not engaged by your posts.

The fourth sign to look for to determine if you are engaging your readers enough is to analyze how many of your readers mention what your blog posts or link back to your site. If readers are not linking or mentioning your blog posts elsewhere, you may not be engaging your readers as well as you should be.
